Mistakes to Avoid at the MotoGP British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Mistakes to Avoid

The things that catch people out at the British GP — sorted before you go

1

Planning

Booking accommodation too late

Critical

Silverstone is not inside a city — Towcester and Brackley, the two nearest towns, have limited hotel capacity, and the British GP fills it early. If those are booked out, Northampton and Milton Keynes have significantly more rooms but add a longer commute. Camping at one of the official or private sites just outside the circuit boundary is a strong fallback that also solves the parking problem.

Planning

Skipping Friday or arriving without a plan

Minor

Friday has the smallest crowds of the weekend and is the best day to walk the circuit, test the covered roving stands, and work out how far the walk really is from your car park allocation to the gates. Fans who skip straight to Saturday or Sunday are learning the layout for the first time on the busiest days.

Timing

Arriving too late on race day

Critical

Sunday gates open at 6:30 AM — earlier than Friday and Saturday's 7:30 AM. Car parks are grassland with a 20-30 minute walk to the gates depending on your allocation, and the roving general admission stands (including The Vale) are first-come, first-served. Arriving at a "normal" race-day time here means arriving late.

Tickets

Not printing your ticket

Critical

Mobile tickets work at Silverstone, but phone signal gets congested with tens of thousands of fans on the same towers, and battery drains faster while your phone searches for signal. Screenshot your ticket or print a backup before you leave your accommodation — not at the gate queue.

Tickets

Planning to buy grandstand tickets on the day

Critical

Reserved grandstands at Abbey, Hamilton Straight, Becketts, and Club Corner sell out well before race week. Even parking sells out — the Sixfields park & ride site is already sold out for 2026. Buy tickets and book your parking or shuttle in the same sitting, as early as you can.

Transport

Assuming you can get a taxi after the race

Critical

Silverstone sits in open countryside, not a town centre — there is no realistic taxi rank at the gate, and ride-hailing apps have limited driver coverage in this rural area at the exact moment tens of thousands of fans are trying to leave at once. Use the official park & ride, train + shuttle, or your own car with the exit-queue expectations set in advance.

Transport

Driving and expecting a quick exit

Critical

Queues leaving the circuit after sessions can run up to three hours from the closer, unofficial car parks. Official Silverstone-run car parks and the park & ride sites exist specifically to cut this down. If you must drive and use unofficial parking, either leave before the podium ceremony or accept the long wait.

Technology

Relying on your phone for navigation and communication

Critical

Mobile data slows down significantly with tens of thousands of fans on the same cell towers. Download offline maps of the circuit and car park area before you arrive, screenshot your ticket and parking confirmation, and agree a physical meeting point with your group — a named grandstand or gate, not "I'll message you".

Bag Policy

Bringing glass, alcohol, or prohibited items

Moderate

Glass containers are prohibited, as at virtually every UK outdoor event. Rules on bringing your own alcohol have changed at British motorsport venues before — check silverstone.co.uk/security close to your travel date rather than assuming last year's rules still apply. Confiscated items are not stored, so leave anything borderline at your accommodation, car, or campsite.

Preparation

Not packing for variable weather

Moderate

Silverstone is a converted WWII airfield — flat, open, and exposed to wind in a way most circuits are not. Daytime temperatures typically run 16-24°C but rain is possible on any day of the weekend, and the site has historically had several wet race weekends. Pack a waterproof layer, a warm mid-layer, and closed-toe shoes regardless of the forecast the week before.

Comfort

Not bringing ear protection

Moderate

Silverstone's long straights mean sustained top speed for longer than most circuits — the noise from a grandstand near Hamilton Straight or the Vale is louder than TV prepares you for. Foam earplugs are cheap and effective; loop earplugs are better if you still want to hear the atmosphere.
