Getting to the MotoGP British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Grand Prix of Great Britain

Getting to Silverstone

Traffic and parking are the #1 thing to get right this weekend

More first-timers get caught out by transport than anything else at Silverstone

This is a rural circuit built on former airfield land, moving tens of thousands of people. Sort your parking, shuttle, or camping booking before you sort anything else about the weekend.

Airports

BHXBirmingham Airport

Under an hour by car

Pros: The nearest major airport to the circuit, with domestic and European connections.

Cons: No direct rail link to Silverstone — you will need a car or connect via road.

LHR / LTN / LGWLondon airports (Heathrow, Luton, Gatwick)

Roughly 1.5-2 hours by car

Pros: The widest range of international connections if you are flying in from outside the UK.

Cons: Further from the circuit — factor London traffic and the drive north into your schedule, especially on race weekend.

Getting to the Circuit

Do not follow your sat nav

  • — This is Silverstone's own guidance, not a fan tip — sat nav apps route drivers onto the wrong roads and into avoidable queues.
  • — Follow the signed blue public parking route and the traffic marshals on the day instead.
  • — This applies whether you are driving in for the first time or you drove here last year — the approach roads and one-way system change year to year.

Driving & Parking

  • — All parking must be booked online in advance — it is ANPR-based (your number plate is your pass) and cannot be bought on the gate.
  • — Official car parks are grassland. Depending on your allocation, expect a 20-30 minute walk from the car park to the gates.
  • — Unofficial and private lots (such as charity-run overflow parking) exist near the circuit but cost more than official parking.
  • — Motorcycle parking is available and should be booked in advance as part of your ticket or parking package.
  • — The A43 between Towcester and Brackley runs event-only one-way traffic management on race weekend — relevant if you are staying in that corridor.

Official Park & Ride

  • — Hinton and Bicester are the official 2026 park & ride sites, each roughly 40 minutes from the circuit by shuttle.
  • — Sixfields is sold out for 2026 — do not plan around it.
  • — Park & ride sites must be booked in advance, the same as circuit car parks.

Train + Shuttle

  • — Milton Keynes Central — around 50 minutes to the circuit by shuttle bus.
  • — Northampton — around 40 minutes by shuttle.
  • — Banbury — around 50 minutes by shuttle.
  • — Oxford Parkway — around 45 minutes by shuttle.
  • — Coventry — around 80 minutes by shuttle, the longest of the shuttle-served stations.
  • — Shuttles run roughly £15-16 per person for a return ticket — book ahead rather than assuming you can pay on the day.

Post-Race Exit Strategy

Queues leaving the circuit after sessions can run up to three hours from the closer, unofficial car parks. Official car parks and the park & ride sites are recommended specifically to reduce this.

  • —Use official parking or park & ride: Both exist specifically to cut down exit queue times compared to unofficial overflow lots.
  • —Train + shuttle: Removes the driving-out bottleneck entirely, at the cost of a shuttle queue of its own. Still generally more predictable than driving.
  • —Camping: Walk back to your tent. The most reliable way to avoid post-race traffic entirely.
  • —Driving: If you must drive and cannot tolerate a long queue, leave before the podium ceremony. Otherwise, build the wait into your plans rather than fighting it.

Where to Stay

Towcester

Closest small town, within the A43 traffic-management corridor

Limited hotel stock. Book early — this is the first place fans look when Silverstone-adjacent options run out.

Brackley

Similar distance to Towcester

Premier Inn Brackley Heath is a commonly cited option, though it is roughly an hour's walk through fields to the circuit — not realistic on foot, and driving is still affected by the event traffic management.

Northampton

~40 min shuttle from the station on race days

The largest nearby town with meaningfully more hotel capacity than Towcester or Brackley.

Milton Keynes

~50 min shuttle from Milton Keynes Central

Good hotel availability and a straightforward train connection if you are coming from London or further afield.

Camping (official and private sites)

5-10 min walk from the gates at the closest official sites

No camping inside the circuit boundary itself, but several sites sit just outside it. Solves the parking and exit-traffic problem in one move — see the packing guide for what to bring.
