Automotive

Automotive Heritage

Saxony is the cradle of German automotive industry. Auto Union (now Audi), DKW motorcycles, Horch, and the Trabant were all born in this region. The Sachsenring itself has hosted racing since the 1920s.

Automotive

August Horch Museum, Zwickau

2-3 hrsMotorsport fans, car enthusiastsMust-see

One of Germany's best automotive museums, housed in the original Audi factory. Covers the full history of Auto Union, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer — the four rings that became Audi. Includes pre-war racing cars, the legendary Silver Arrows, and the story of the Trabant (also built in Zwickau). If you are at the Sachsenring for motorsport, this museum connects the region's racing present to its industrial past. Open daily. About 30 minutes from the circuit.

Sachsenring Racing History

1-2 hrsMotoGP history buffs

Racing at the Sachsenring dates back to the 1920s when the original track used public roads through Hohenstein-Ernstthal. The Badberg climb was part of the old layout. Walk through the town and you will see historical markers and monuments to the circuit's past — including the era when it hosted the East German motorcycle grand prix. Free. Walk the town on Thursday or Friday before the racing starts.

Culture

Culture & Museums

The Sachsenring sits near cities with deep cultural heritage, from European Capital of Culture Chemnitz to the motorsport museum in Hohenstein-Ernstthal.

Culture

Chemnitz — European Capital of Culture 2025

Half dayCulture lovers

Just 25 km from the circuit, Chemnitz was European Capital of Culture in 2025. The programme left behind renovated museums, new art installations, and a revitalised cultural scene. The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (art collection) is excellent, and the Karl Marx Monument — a massive 7-metre bronze head — is one of the most striking pieces of public art in Germany. Open year-round. Combine with dinner in Chemnitz for a full evening out.

Culture

Textil- und Rennsportmuseum Hohenstein-Ernstthal

1 hrHistory buffs

A small museum in Hohenstein-Ernstthal covering the town's twin heritage: textile manufacturing and motorsport. The motorsport section covers the Sachsenring's history from the 1920s road circuit to the modern permanent track. A nice complement to the race weekend. In the town centre. Check opening hours — limited days.

Nature

Outdoor & Nature

The Sachsenring sits on the northern edge of the Erzgebirge mountains, offering forested trails, reservoir walks, and traditional mining towns.

Nature

Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains)

Half dayHikers, nature lovers

The Sachsenring sits on the northern edge of the Erzgebirge, a forested mountain range along the German-Czech border. The area is known for hiking, traditional mining towns, and a distinctive wooden toy and Christmas decoration craft tradition. In July, the forests and meadows are at their best. Accessible by car from the circuit. Good for a half-day trip if you have a day off.

Nature

Stausee Oberwald

2-3 hrsRelaxation, families

A reservoir and recreation area near Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Good for a walk or a swim in July if the weather is hot. A low-key way to spend a few hours away from the circuit energy. Walking distance from some campsites. Free access.

Leipzig

80 km / 1h by train

A vibrant city with world-class cultural institutions, great nightlife, and a fascinating recent history. Visit the Stasi Museum, the St. Thomas Church (where Bach worked), and the Spinnerei — a former cotton mill turned into one of Europe's largest gallery complexes.

Zwickau

30 km / 25 min drive

The August Horch Museum alone justifies the trip. The town also has a pleasant old centre and is the birthplace of composer Robert Schumann. Compact enough for a half-day visit.
