Wine

Wine Tastings — Csopak District

The Csopak and Balatonfured-Csopak wine district is immediately adjacent to the circuit. Olaszrizling (Italian Riesling) is the signature — crisp, mineral whites that pair perfectly with lake fish. Most wineries are a 10-15 minute drive from the track.

Wine

Jasdi Winery

1-1.5 hrsWine lovers

Well-regarded family winery in the Csopak wine district. Tastings of Olaszrizling and other local varieties in a relaxed hillside setting with views over the vineyards toward the lake. Check opening times and book ahead for race weekend. Most wineries accommodate walk-ins on quieter days.

Wine

St. Donat Winery

1-1.5 hrsWine enthusiastsPremium

One of the top producers in the Csopak-Balatonfured wine region. Known for mineral whites and elegant roses. A more curated tasting experience than the smaller family estates. Book online. Popular with wine tourism visitors year-round.

Wine

Figula Winery

1-1.5 hrsFirst-time visitors

Long-established name in the Balaton wine scene. Terrace tastings with views, a good range of whites, and a welcoming atmosphere. A solid choice if you have time for only one winery. Open during summer months. Check availability for race weekend.

Tihany

Tihany — The Must-Visit

If you have one afternoon free during the race weekend, spend it at Tihany. The abbey, the lavender fields, and the lake views make it the single best experience within 30 minutes of the circuit.

Tihany

Tihany Abbey (Tihanyi Apatsag)

2-3 hrsEveryoneMust-see

Benedictine abbey founded in 1055 on the Tihany Peninsula. One of Hungary's most photographed landmarks — the twin towers rising above Lake Balaton are iconic. The abbey church is open to visitors and has a small museum. The views from the terrace are some of the best in the region. ~25 km from the circuit. Allow 2-3 hours including the drive, the abbey, and a wander around the village. Parking fills up in summer — arrive before noon.

Tihany

Tihany village and lavender fields

1-2 hrsCouples, photographers

The village around the abbey is a network of cobblestone lanes, artisan shops, and small galleries. In June, the lavender fields near Tihany are in bloom — the scent and colour are remarkable. The inner lake (Belso-to) and echo hill are quieter attractions off the main path. Free to walk around. Lavender products (oils, honey, soap) make good souvenirs. Best visited on Thursday or Friday before the crowds intensify.

History

History & Culture

The Balaton region has more historical depth than a typical lakeside resort — from medieval castle quarters to world-famous porcelain.

History

Veszprem Castle Quarter

1-2 hrsHistory lovers

Veszprem was historically the "City of Queens" — where Hungarian queens were crowned. The castle quarter sits on a hilltop with medieval streets, the fire tower with panoramic views, the Heroes' Gate, and the Archbishop's Palace. A compact walk of 1-2 hours covers the highlights.

History

Herend Porcelain Manufactory

1.5 hrsCulture lovers, families

World-famous porcelain factory in Herend, about 35 km from the circuit. The Porcelanium museum and factory tour shows how the hand-painted pieces are made. A surprisingly interesting visit even if porcelain isn't your thing.

History

Balatonfured heritage

1-2 hrsWalkers, history buffs

Balatonfured has been a spa town since the 18th century. The Tagore promenade (named after the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who convalesced here), the Round Church, and the old bath quarter give it more historical depth than a typical lakeside resort.

Lake

Lake & Outdoors

Lake Balaton is Hungary's inland sea — beaches, swimming, and volcanic wine hills are all part of daily life here in June.

Lake

Lake Balaton beaches

Half dayFamilies, swimmers

Lake Balaton has dozens of beaches along both shores. Water temperature in June is around 20-22 degrees C — swimmable but fresh. Balatonkenese (closest to the circuit) has a free public beach. Balatonfured and Tihany have better-maintained paid beaches with facilities. The lake is very shallow (average 3.3m deep). Safe for swimming but can develop surprising waves in sudden storms.

Lake

Badacsony wine hill

Half dayActive travellers, wine lovers

A volcanic hill on the northern shore about 55 km from the circuit. Hiking trails lead to the summit with panoramic lake views. The hillside is lined with cellar-door wineries. Combine a morning hike with afternoon tastings. ~50 min drive from the circuit. Best suited for a Thursday or Friday half-day trip.

Worth considering if you have extra time around Balaton.

Budapest

~1h 15min by car

Hungary's capital is world-class: thermal baths (Szechenyi, Gellert), ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter, Parliament on the Danube, and incredible food. If you have a day before or after the race, Budapest is unmissable.

EveryoneDay before or after race weekendPopular

Szekesfehervar

~35 min by car

Former royal capital with a well-preserved baroque old town. Less touristy than Budapest but genuinely charming. Good restaurants and a museum quarter. A quick morning trip if you are curious.

History buffsThursday morning

Badacsony

~50 min by car

Volcanic wine hill with hiking trails and cellar-door tastings overlooking the lake. More rustic than Csopak. The views from the top are some of the best in Hungary.
